Psionic, LLC. is seeking a, motivated, fast-paced Director of Business Development focused on the Defense market who is confident and experienced in dealing with defense products, systems and customers. The position will be located onsite, in Hampton, VA

We value a diverse, hands-on background to build a team and develop products from concept to manufacture for customers in space, defense and automotive sectors.

What a Great Director of Business Development, Defense will be doing

You will serve as the internal spearhead for market strategy, customer growth, market intelligence, and generating profitable business leads in the various market areas throughout the U.S. Depending on the level of customer engagement, you may provide guidance on multi-product opportunities. The company has multiple sensor products and you will be responsible for understanding the needs of our target customer base, translating that into a detailed market strategy and pursuing those directly. Products fall into the categories of Advanced Navigation, Fire Control, Situational Awareness, Weapons/Guidance Systems and Electro Optics systems for a variety of tactical applications.

The position requires flexibility to manage multiple projects while closing deals. Individual must be confident and experienced dealing within the defense and Federal markets domestically and potentially internationally. The successful candidate must be able to interact with a broad range of government leaders,company executives and technical staff. The successful candidate is a seasoned Business Development professional with a high sense of urgency.

Required Education & Requirements

  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a Technical discipline required,
  • 10+ years business development experience, and program management experience with solid understanding of the defense market
  • Demonstrated success in conversion of business opportunities into contracts ($2-$50M)
  • Demonstrated capability to secure both R&D and Production contracts
  • Demonstrated ability to transition customer objectives into a program requirements for new technology
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Experienced negotiator at all levels
  • Professional experience in the defense or aerospace industry with a strong network
  • Persuasive communicator with excellent presentation skills
  • Personal experience with sales quota, performance compensation and/or enterprise sales managements preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong teamwork, a desire to learn and driven to improve
  • Experience at a fast-paced and demanding start-up.
  • Hands-on experience with products developed for defense or other rugged environments
  • Major Responsibilities

  • Work directly with the VP Defense to matrix, rank and prioritize sensor products versus competitive products, market problem, market size, sales life cycle to develop an actionable plan
  • Independently execute business development plan with minimal oversight, while coordinating with technology, product and other internal departments
  • Provide results of success against objectives
  • Secure partnerships and funding to establish R&D projects to create competitive advantage in new & follow-on products
  • Contribute as VOC (voice of customer) and product leader in product adaptation and new product development, and with business case development, pricing, delivery model and sales formulation
  • Leverage existing rolodex of government and space industry contacts as a starting point for your efforts
  • Perform additional market need, competitive analysis and other work as required
  • Travel of 20%-50% estimated, but has the ability to travel as required

  • Someone that is an experienced and willing traveler who will manage travel up to 50% of their time in the direct relationship of new business goals and objectives for the organization
